The beginning
The term 'angels' share' comes from the liquor world, where a portion of brandy evaporates from oak casks each year as it ages, lost to the air and given to the angels. Kilian Hennessy, heir to the cognac dynasty, pays tribute to that heritage through fragrance. The scent of spirits lost to barrels, oak soaked through with decades of aging, the warm sweetness that lingers in a cognac house after the master blender leaves, that inheritance became perfume. Benoist Lapouza composed the scent in a first-time collaboration with the house, drawing on the language of the cellar. Cognac essence at the top, oak absolute in the heart, praline and sandalwood below. The Liquors collection treats the accord seriously, and you can taste the reason.
What makes Angels' Share unusual is the structural honesty. Most gourmand compositions build their sweetness upward, vanilla and praline as a base, lighter notes floating above. Here the sweetness is anchored by wood from the very first moment. The evolution

Cinnamon enters within minutes, not sharp, more like bark dusted into cocoa, and the oak absolute rises alongside it, dry and grounding. The transition into the heart phase happens gradually, and here the tonka bean does quiet work, rounding the spice into something almost edible, the caramelized edges softening into a rounder, more confectionary register. The fragrance settles into its most convincing character once the praline and sandalwood push forward, and the whole composition takes on a confectionary warmth that still smells serious, the sweetness grounded by wood.
