The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Vitalising Vitamin AB+C arrived as part of Molton Brown's broader body and bath collection, designed to do what the name promises: vitalise. The composition leans into a straightforward ethos built around immediacy rather than complexity. Italian mandarin, bitter orange, and lemon form the opening trio, a bright citrus chord chosen for its lift rather than its intricacy. The formula sits in the eau fraîche category, lighter than an eau de toilette, built for layering and reapplication rather than long-wearing projection. That concentration choice shapes everything about how the scent behaves on skin. The citrus reads at full volume almost instantly, the kind of brightness that registers before you've even left the bathroom.
The choice of fig leaf in the heart is what keeps this from being a one-note citrus splash. Fig leaf brings a dry, almost paper-like greenness, the smell of leaves warmed by sun on stone rather than the fruit itself. Combined with petitgrain, derived from the leaf of the bitter orange tree, and neroli, distilled from its blossom, the heart creates a continuous citrus thread that moves from fruit to foliage to flower without breaking the spell. It's a clever structure, because each phase reinforces the same idea while changing the angle. You smell the tree, not just the fruit.
The evolution
The first 15 minutes are almost aggressively bright. Italian mandarin and lemon hit the skin with that just-squeezed quality, sharp, slightly sweet, and very much alive. Bitter orange adds a faint bitter edge underneath, the taste of pith rather than juice. Around the 30-minute mark, the citrus softens and the green notes surface. Fig leaf arrives with a dry, almost milky-green character, while petitgrain contributes a slightly bitter, herbal quality that reads as living plant rather than fruit. Neroli weaves through, adding a faint floral sweetness that never announces itself. By the 2-hour mark, the composition has settled into its quiet base: cedar provides a clean woodiness, patchouli adds depth without going earthy, and white musk holds everything close to skin. The fragrance doesn't project much after the first hour.
Cultural impact
This composition wears like a summer essential rather than a statement fragrance. The eau fraîche concentration makes it forgiving for layering and reapplication, which suits its lightweight character and the way it behaves on skin throughout warm weather. The citrus-forward opening reads as refreshing without crossing into aggressive territory, and the green heart gives it enough complexity to hold interest beyond the first few minutes. Because the fragrance doesn't project heavily after the initial burst, it functions best as a personal scent, something intimate rather than performative.
