The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Nathalie Koobus designed Labdanum Dusk as an exercise in deliberate opulence. Spicy-resinous in character, anchored by cedar needles and saffron at the top, with cypriol and leather at the heart. The name itself suggests something halfway between event and inevitability, the hour when light changes but hasn't gone. Koobus built it for the wearer who doesn't need a fragrance to announce them; the composition does that on its own terms. Launched in 2021, the scent embodies a confident hand at work, one that understands restraint can be as powerful as excess. The balance between spice and resin, between warmth and shadow, creates something that feels both modern and rooted in older traditions of perfume making.
What sets this apart is the cedar appearing twice, in the opening and again threaded through the heart. The cypriol adds an earthy, almost medicinal dryness that counterbalances the saffron's heat. And the labdanum provides a balsamic richness that holds everything together rather than fading into sweetness. The cedar creates continuity between phases that often feel disconnected in other fragrances, giving Labdanum Dusk a rare sense of coherence. It's a composition that rewards attention, the kind that reveals something new the third time you wear it.
The evolution
The saffron opens sharp, bright, metallic, attention-grabbing. Cedar needles arrive within minutes, grounding the spice and keeping it from becoming one-dimensional. The first hour is the most demanding: cypriol and leather take over, and this is where the fragrance either pulls you in or makes you wait. For those who stay, the leather settles into the composition, becoming less assertive as the deeper notes begin to emerge. By the third hour, labdanum and oud arrive together, adding warmth and depth that transforms the initial sharpness into something richer. Vanilla and tonka bean hold the base, but they don't dominate. They soften. Patchouli grounds the final stretch, keeping the composition from drifting into sweetness. The final hours are a skin-close warmth that lingers, with the leather and labdanum remaining closest to the skin while the vanilla recedes first.
Cultural impact
Labdanum Dusk offers something for those drawn to resinous, opulent compositions that avoid leaning into familiar stereotypes. The saffron-leather-oud combination signals expense without aggression, a draw for wearers who appreciate depth and nuance over straightforward projection. The moderate sillage means it doesn't fill a room, but the long drydown rewards anyone standing close enough to notice. It's the kind of fragrance that creates connection rather than conquest, drawing people in rather than announcing itself across a space.
