The beginning
Bizarre Brandy landed in 2019, composed by Karine Dubreuil-Sereni with a brief that reads clearly from the opening spritz: take the warmth of a brandy-soaked evening and translate it into something you can wear on skin. The name tells you the mood. Brandy is the anchor, but the real ambition sits in what surrounds it, coffee, maple syrup, tobacco. A pour, a sip, a long exhale. On skin, the brandy opens with a boozy, slightly burnt-sugar lift, almost like the moment caramel catches at the edge of a pan. The coffee note threads underneath within minutes, bitter and roasted, giving the composition a grounding bitterness that keeps the sweetness from sliding into syrup.
What's interesting here is how the gourmand center gets rescued from sweetness. Maple syrup and coffee could tip this into dessert territory fast. The tobacco, cedarwood, and frankincense in the base refuse to let that happen. They pull the composition back toward something drier, earthier, almost ecclesiastical. Cognac does the same job in the heart, adding that fermented, woody burn that says grown-up rather than sugar rush. Dubreuil-Sereni built a bridge between two styles that usually don't share a bottle, and the result feels like the odd cousin in the Molton Brown lineup on purpose.
The evolution

Coffee and cognac flood the mid-stage, and the maple syrup slides in underneath like it belongs there. The sweetness is real but not sticky. Somewhere around the two-hour mark, the tobacco starts pulling weight. It doesn't replace the gourmand heart so much as lean against it, turning the whole composition into something smokier, more contemplative. By hour four, the cedarwood and frankincense have taken over the base, and what's left on skin reads almost meditative. Lasts six to eight hours depending on skin chemistry. Moderate sillage through the first half, then it pulls close and stays there, a private warmth that lasts into the next morning on fabric.

Bizarre Brandy has earned its share of attention from wearers who gravitate toward fragrances with a darker, more contemplative edge. It tends to appeal to those who reach for pipe tobacco over vanilla, who want their fragrance to read like a setting rather than a statement. On skin, the opening carries that boozy brandy lift alongside a roasted coffee bitterness, which settles within the first hour into a warmer, sweeter heart of maple syrup and dried fruits.
