The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Miller et Bertaux launched Close Your Eyes, And... in 2006 as part of their collection exploring the relationship between scent and memory. Close Your Eyes, And... arrived as a modern homage to the great perfumes of the past. The name itself invites pause. Close your eyes and what? The composition answers: a world where pear and white florals coexist with smoky guaiac wood, where forty ingredients resolve into something coherent and wearable. The subtitle, Bois de Gaiac et Poire, makes the central tension clear from the start. This is a fragrance built around the paradox of a fruity note inside a woody structure. The pear anchors the heart, working alongside the florals to create a cohesive scent narrative.
What makes Close Your Eyes, And... interesting as a composition is the way it handles the powdery note. Heliotrope often reads as dessert-like, almost saccharine, in lighter fragrances. Here it has to coexist with guaiac wood's smoky dryness and the spice of cinnamon in the base. The result is a heliotrope that feels less like a bakery and more like a warm skin note, the kind of powdery softness that clings to cashmere rather than cotton candy. The almond amplifies this. Almond and heliotrope together create an edible warmth that makes the drydown feel intimate without being sweet. The cinnamon prevents it from becoming too soft, adding a slight bite that keeps the base honest.
The evolution
The opening is the most straightforward part. Calabrian mandarin and Sicilian lemon arrive together, bright and Mediterranean, the kind of citrus that reads as sunny without being aggressive. This phase lasts maybe thirty minutes before the florals begin to assert themselves. The heart is where the pear earns its place. Turkish rose and jasmine could easily tip into traditional white floral territory, heavy and sweet. The pear intercepts that trajectory, giving the florals an aqueous quality that feels modern and slightly cool. Guaiac wood sits underneath, adding structure without overwhelming. This is the phase that most resembles the brand's intent: old-world florals made contemporary by the addition of a single fruity note. The drydown is where Close Your Eyes, And... separates itself from the crowd. The heliotrope and almond base does not arrive immediately.
Cultural impact
Close Your Eyes, And... occupies a specific corner of the niche world. It fits that identity precisely. The fragrance stands apart from louder compositions, offering instead a quiet persistence that distinguishes it in a crowded market. Those who wear it find that it remains present without overwhelming, becoming a personal signature rather than a dominating presence.
