The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Discover arrived in 2023 from Andrea Marcoccia. There's no mythologizing around this one. The name is the brief: discover. What's there to find in a Mediterranean afternoon if you stop and actually pay attention to the air? The composition sets out to answer that without sentimental shortcuts. No vanilla warmth padding the base, no crowd-pleasing sweetness to soften it. Just the specific scent of a particular kind of place, rendered with a directness that doesn't rely on convention. The fragrance opens with an unusual accord built around lettuce, mandarin, and aquatic notes, a combination that reads less like a designed top and more like an overheard moment. As the opening cools, juniper adds a crisp edge before the composition tips into its greener, woodier territory.
What makes this composition interesting is the decision to lead with lettuce. It brings a green, almost watery crunch that gets closer to the smell of torn leaves than to any fruit or standard green note. Pair that with mandarin and juniper at the opening, then drop cypress and pine needles into the heart, and the whole thing reads as terrain rather than as decoration. The aromatic backbone, vetiver running through both the heart and the base, is what holds the green from floating away into nothing. It's a structure that respects the difference between smelling fresh and smelling alive.
The evolution
The opening moves through water and green quickly, built on aquatic notes, mandarin, and that unusual lettuce note reading like cool air moving over wet leaves. Juniper adds a faint bite to the start. Then the green settles and gets woodier. Cypress and pine needles push forward while angelica and rose hang back, adding just enough softness to keep it from going aggressively forest. As the wear continues, you're firmly in the drydown: vetiver, cedar, musk, and a generic woody base that doesn't try to show off. The musk is clean rather than overwhelming, which means the fragrance keeps its distance even as it gets quieter. Over time, what's left is a soft woody trace close to the skin. The progression from aquatic brightness through aromatic green into a muted mineral base feels intentional rather than accidental.
Cultural impact
Discover reads as a composition that knows exactly what it wants to be. The cypress, pine, and vetiver at its base place it within a recognizable aromatic-green tradition, but the lettuce top and the clean musk in the base give it a current signature that holds its own. The lettuce opening is unexpected enough to distinguish it from obvious benchmarks in the aquatic or aromatic-green space. Where many green fragrances rely on citruses or herbal top notes to announce themselves, this one leads with a vegetal coolness that mimics air rather than fruit.
The House
MarcocciaMarcoccia is an Italian niche fragrance house founded in 2006 by perfumer Andrea Marcoccia. The house occupies a distinctive space within Italian perfumery, creating scents that translate personal memories and Mediterranean landscapes into wearable compositions. Marcoccia's collection spans multiple olfactory territories, from the warm embrace of vanillas and patchoulis to the bright citrus groves of Sicily. The brand operates as an independent house, with Andrea Marcoccia serving as both founder and perfumer, a structure that allows complete creative control over every composition. The house publishes fragrances at a deliberate pace rather than seasonal releases, with notable works including Mandorla di Sicilia from 2009, Vaniglia & Patchouli and Vaniglia Intensa both from 2020, and several 2023 releases including Ombre Nomade, Discover, Panta Rei, and Moonshine. Each fragrance draws from Italian cultural touchstones, often referencing specific regions, memories, or family connections, positioning Marcoccia as a deeply personal project within the niche fragrance landscape.
