The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Night was born from a 2024 collaboration between Lost Tribe and Yaaseen. Perfumer Mathew Schmuelian built the composition around a single, uncompromising material: a 3-gram pour of aged Semangat oud oil, harvested in Pontianak, West Kalimantan, and matured since 2005. The fragrance aims to capture night itself: that particular hour when a garden goes quiet and the smoke from somewhere nearby starts carrying jasmine and wood resin across the dark. Every other note in the pyramid, from the opening turmeric to the deep sandalwood base, was chosen to set off that dense, balsamic core without softening it. The result is a composition that commits fully to its material, building outward from one extraordinary oil rather than borrowing oud as decoration.
What makes Night worth your attention is the oud itself. Semangat is sourced from Aquilaria malaccensis, the tree species that produces genuine agarwood through natural infection. The oil has been aged since 2005, meaning close to twenty years of slow maturation in whatever conditions it was stored before reaching the bottle. At 3 grams per flacon, the pour is generous by any modern standard, and the surrounding notes (tobacco, gallic rose, frangipani, hay) don't decorate the oud so much as argue with it, pulling the fragrance between floral sweetness and smoky, barnyard depth.
The evolution
The first thirty minutes are the loudest. Turmeric and juniper arrive with a green, almost bitter snap that cuts through the air immediately. Mimosa floats beneath it, adding a powdery honey quality that softens the opening without dulling it. Violet leaf adds a cold, watery edge, like dew on stone at dusk. By the end of the first hour, the smoke takes over: tobacco, hinoki wood, and pine arrive together, and the composition shifts into something darker and more resinous. The hinoki brings a clean, almost cypress-like clarity to the smoke, while the pine adds a sharper, greener resin note underneath. Frangipani and carnation add creamy, slightly indolic sweetness mid-way through, the floral heart of the fragrance at its most generous. The frangipani reads almost tropical against the smoke, a creamy white floral that catches the tobacco and softens its edges.
Cultural impact
Night sits at the heavier end of Lost Tribe's catalogue, a release that commits fully to resins and smoke rather than pulling back toward safer territory. It's a collaboration with Yaaseen, which positions it as a meeting point between Lost Tribe's all-natural philosophy and a partner's commitment to aged, regionally specific oud oils. The Yaaseen side of the project brings the Semangat, an oud with its own provenance and aging history, and the collaboration treats it accordingly. The 3-gram oud concentration makes it less a casual everyday wear than a focused, intentional scent, built around a material that demands attention.
