The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Richard Ibanez created Living Lalique in 2015. The fragrance takes its name directly from the collection, embodying the idea that these scents are living expressions of the brand's artistic legacy. The scent opens with a luminous burst of citrus, where sun-drenched lemon and sweet orange intertwine with delicate floral undertones. At its heart, a powdery iris accord brings softness and texture, grounded by warm, earthy vetiver that adds depth without heaviness. The drydown reveals a lingering embrace of white musk and subtle amber, leaving the skin with a refined, intimate trail that speaks to Lalique's heritage of understated elegance.
The composition pivots on iris, not the typical powdery iris most expect, but something with more weight and earthiness. Ibanez paired it with a cedar-vetiver base that grounds the florals in something woody and substantial. The mint in the opening isn't a gimmicky fresh kick, it's a cool counterpoint that makes the lavender feel crisp rather than soapy. Cashmeran bridges the heart and base, adding a musky warmth that keeps the woods from reading too dry. The result is a fragrance that moves convincingly from fresh opening to creamy close.
The evolution
The opening hits bright and cool, bergamot and mint together, with lavender adding an aromatic snap that reads clean without being soapy. Within fifteen minutes, black pepper and nutmeg arrive at the heart, warming the chill without losing it. The iris reveals itself slowly, earthy and rooty rather than powdery-sweet. By the second hour, the base takes over: sandalwood and cedar form a woody architecture, vetiver adds a mineral earthiness, and tonka bean emerges as a soft, warm undertone. The drydown is intimate and close, this is a skin scent, not a room filler. As the hours pass, the fragrance settles into a quiet, personal presence that feels almost second-skin, with the woody elements slowly fading to reveal a subtle whisper of warm, powdery iris that lingers softly on the skin.
Cultural impact
Living Lalique occupies an interesting position in the Lalique lineup, neither the most floral nor the most oriental. It's a fragrance that appeals to those who appreciate refined everyday luxury, with a carefully balanced character that speaks to discerning tastes. The bottle design has drawn collector interest, reflecting the house's dedication to excellence in both vessel and fragrance.
