The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Ambre & Santal takes its name from the two materials at its heart: amber and sandalwood. But calling it a simple marriage undersells what Karine Dubreuil-Sereni built around those two anchors. Released in 2013, the fragrance does more than honor its namesakes. The fig leaf and rose in the heart give it a gentleness the name alone doesn't promise, softening the warm resins and woody depth into a composition that feels both grounded and delicate. The amber arrives not with a heavy, resinous punch but with a soft, powdery quality that blends into the sandalwood rather than competing with it. The sandalwood brings its characteristic creamy, slightly sweet woodiness, yet here it feels smooth and approachable, never heavy or overwhelming.
Ambre & Santal was created to capture the essence of sun-drenched southern landscapes. The perfumer worked to translate that warmth into a fragrance built around the golden, resinous character of amber, with sandalwood providing a creamy, grounding counterpoint. Additional botanical elements add depth and complexity, layering herbal and floral aspects that speak to the richness of the region's plant life. The result is a composition that moves from bright, fresh opening through a gently sweet heart before settling into a warm, enveloping base that feels both sophisticated and comforting.
The evolution
The bergamot and rosemary open this fragrance with an honesty that feels almost confrontational after the first spray, green, herbal, almost medicinal. Then the fig leaf arrives, and the composition softens. The rose doesn't dominate; it sits quietly beneath the green, adding a floral whisper that keeps the heart from feeling too austere. By the time the drydown arrives, the composition has completed its transformation: the herbal opening is gone, replaced by a warm, powdery embrace of vanilla and sandalwood. The cedarwood and labdanum add a resinous depth that keeps the drydown from feeling flat. What remains on skin is a quiet warmth, the kind of scent that lingers on a scarf or a pillow, intimate and close, never filling a room but impossible to ignore when you're near it.
