The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Antoine Lie designed L'Eau par Kenzo Mirror Edition pour Homme for Kenzo's 2014 spring launch, part of the Mirror collection. The fragrance opens with a crisp, refreshing character that combines herbal and aquatic elements. Basil lends an aromatic, slightly spicy quality that adds depth to the top notes, while the overall composition maintains a clean and balanced feel. The structure of the scent follows a precise progression, moving from its initial fresh burst into a more nuanced heart before settling into a refined dry down. Throughout its development, the fragrance maintains an orderly composition that reflects thoughtful construction.
The vodka note provides a cool, clean quality to the opening. Basil adds an aromatic edge that brings herbaceous character to the blend. Grapefruit contributes bitter citrus notes that add complexity to the top. The combination creates a fresh, crisp impression. The heart incorporates water notes and juniper, creating a cool aquatic space. The base arrives with vetiver providing dry, earthy undertones, while musk offers a soft finish that stays close to the skin.
The evolution
Basil cuts sharp in the opening, grapefruit adds bitter citrus, and together with the other top notes they create a fresh, clean impression. Within the first phase, sage and juniper begin to emerge, softening the initial sharpness while keeping the composition cool and herbaceous. The aquatic notes sit in the background, adding transparency without introducing sweetness. The base develops as vetiver's dry, earthy character grounds the composition, while musk provides a soft, skin-close finish. The scent transitions through its stages smoothly, with each layer revealing itself in turn as the fragrance settles and evolves on the skin.
Cultural impact
The Mirror Edition arrived in 2014 as part of Kenzo's fragrance lineup. The fresh aquatic category had been established for some time by then, and this fragrance contributed to the house's presence within that space. The composition includes herbal and aquatic elements that give it particular character within its category. The fragrance forms part of Kenzo's broader collection, representing the brand's ongoing approach to developing scents across different fragrance families.
