The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Les Voyages Olfactifs launched in 2009 as a set of fragrant postcards from the house of Guerlain, each one tied to a world capital. Number 01, Paris-Moscow, was the collection's opening chapter: a feminine Floral Woody Musk meant to capture the scale and forward charge of Moscow without abandoning Parisian composure. The cylinder flacon was drawn by Serge Mansau, finished with a silver cap and silver lettering, and sold exclusively through Guerlain boutiques in a generous 250 ml format. Part postcard, part dispatch. The collection also included 02 Paris-New York and 03 Paris-Tokyo, but this one opened the journey.
What makes the structure interesting is the tension between bright, almost-cold fruit and a deeply musky, vanillic base. Red currant, plum, bergamot, and lemon push toward something bracing and sharp. Pine needles and artemisia (wormwood) drag the opening toward an aromatic, resinous character you don't often see paired with red fruit. Then jasmine floats through the middle like a rumor, delicate enough not to announce itself. The base settles into tonka, vanilla, sandalwood, and white musk. The wormwood-to-vanilla axis is the unusual hinge: it keeps what could be a straightforward sweet fruity floral from collapsing into simple sugar.
The evolution
The first thirty minutes are the sharpest stretch. Red currant and plum read almost cold, lifted further by bergamot and lemon, while pine needles and wormwood give the opening an herbal, faintly bitter backbone that keeps the fruit honest. Around the 45-minute mark jasmine surfaces, though it stays translucent and never dominates, more a veil over the fruit than a floral statement. By hour two the citrus has burned off and the composition tips fully into its warm register: tonka and vanilla swell underneath, sandalwood rounds the edges, and white musk pulls everything close to skin. The drydown is the longest, most lived-in phase, lasting through hour six on most wearers as a soft, sweet, powdery trail of vanilla-tonka musk with just enough residual fruit to keep it from going generic. On fabric the next morning, a faint woody-vanilla whisper remains.
Cultural impact
As the opening entry in Guerlain's Les Voyages Olfactifs series, 01 Paris-Moscow introduced a numbered format that invited collectors to follow the collection as it grew. Its exclusive 250 ml boutique format and Mansau-designed cylinder gave the release a distinct presence on the shelf, and it remains one of the more unusual presentations Guerlain has produced. Worn today, the fragrance carries the quiet confidence of a piece designed for a specific audience rather than the mass market, a release that prioritizes character and concept over broad commercial reach.
