The beginning
My Life Hommage à Marlene Dietrich arrived from the house of Grès wearing its admiration without ceremony. Perfumer Marie Salamagne signed her name to the composition, and the result reads as a study in restraint, more about suggestion than statement. The fragrance leans into a wardrobe of contrasts, building from delicate florals into something rooted, almost architectural in how the pieces hold each other in place. The evolution
The first 30 minutes read almost green, wisteria and pink grapefruit doing the bright, slightly bitter work that the heart notes will eventually take over. Orange blossom hums underneath, lending a kind of soap-clean sweetness that keeps the opening from drifting into candied territory. Then heliotrope arrives, and everything softens. The powdery, almond-leaning character of heliotrope, paired with cedar, creates a middle phase that feels warm and rounded, closer to a well-worn compact than anything freshly mixed. Jasmine sneaks in to keep things from going entirely matte, adding a whisper of indolic warmth that prevents the mid-phase from feeling flat. By hour three the base is running the show.
