The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Goutal Paris began with Annick Goutal's conviction that fragrance should capture personal moments and emotional truths. After her passing, her daughter Camille Goutal took the helm, preserving her mother's poetic approach while allowing the house to evolve. Rose Pompon arrived in 2020, created by Camille Goutal alongside perfumer Philippine Courtiere, as a direct tribute to Annick Goutal's most cherished flower. Rose had always been central to the house, appearing in formulations from Camelia to Songes, but Rose Pompon treats it not merely as an ingredient but as the subject itself.
The note structure here serves a specific purpose: the fruity opening attracts attention, the rose heart sustains emotion, and the benzoin-patchouli base grounds everything in warmth. Pink pepper adds just enough complexity to prevent the composition from reading as overly sweet, while ambrette provides a musky softness that makes the drydown feel skin-like rather than perfumey. The choice of Siam benzoin over other resinous materials signals a preference for sweet, vanillic warmth over sharper balsamic qualities. Together, these notes create a rose that feels accessible without being simplistic, a fragrance that honors tradition while feeling current.
The evolution
The fragrance moves from a fruity, spiced opening into a floral heart and finally a warm, resinous base. Raspberry and blackcurrant provide an immediate burst of brightness that feels both modern and playful. Pink pepper adds a flicker of complexity that keeps the opening from feeling simple. As the heart develops, rose emerges as the undisputed focal point, supported by viola's gentle powder. The drydown introduces Siam benzoin, ambrette, patchouli, and vanilla, a combination that warms and deepens the composition, transforming the initial brightness into something more contemplative and intimate.
Cultural impact
Since its 2020 launch, Rose Pompon has offered a different take on the fruity-rose-gourmand trend, emphasizing softness and wearability over statement projection. The fragrance strikes a balance between nostalgic femininity and modern sensibility that makes it adaptable across occasions. Its powdery rose heart carries a distinctive character that loyal Goutal wearers recognize as part of the house's signature approach to romantic composition.
