The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Mandragore Pourpre arrived in 2009 from Camille Goutal and Isabelle Doyen, two perfumers who understood that naming a fragrance after mandrake meant something. The root carries weight, medieval associations of magic, danger, forbidden knowledge stretching from Machiavelli to Shakespeare. This wasn't a brief for another spicy-oriental. It was an invitation to work with something older and stranger.
The note structure reflects that ambition. Star anise and mint open with an aromatic sharpness that refuses sweetness. Black pepper and rosemary anchor the heart, herbal, almost medicinal in their intensity. The base brings incense and patchouli, but heliotrope and myrrh keep it from becoming simply dark. The combination is unusual: fresh and spicy, cool and warm, green and resinous. Not a safe composition. That's the point.
The evolution
The opening hits cool, mint and star anise creating a sensation closer to a struck match than a citrus splash. Bergamot arrives within minutes but doesn't soften the experience. By the time the heart develops, black pepper and rosemary have taken hold, bringing an herbal spice that reads almost camphorated. The geranium and amber appear gradually, adding green floral warmth to the center. The drydown belongs to incense and patchouli, dark, resinous, long-lasting. Heliotrope and myrrh provide a quieter finish, powdery and close to the skin. On most skin types, the full arc spans 6-8 hours, with moderate sillage that announces your presence without demanding the room's attention.
Cultural impact
Mandragore Pourpre arrived in 2009, a period when niche perfumery was expanding rapidly and sweeter, more accessible compositions dominated. This fragrance went another direction entirely. The herbal-spicy character, the resinous base, the deliberate avoidance of easy sweetness, it stood apart from mainstream preferences and has maintained that distinction. Among fragrance collectors, it occupies a specific niche: the unusual composition that rewards attention.
