The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Mandragore was created by Isabelle Doyen in 2009, taking its name from the mandrake plant, a root that has fascinated Europeans for centuries. In folklore, mandrake was believed to possess magical properties, capable of both healing and harm. The plant's forked shape was said to resemble the human form, and legends claimed it screamed when pulled from the earth, killing anyone who heard it. Goutal translated this duality into scent: bright and herbal, yet threaded with something darker. The result is a fragrance that feels both natural and uncanny, a botanical portrait of a plant that refused to be ordinary.
What makes Mandragore distinctive is the interplay between cool mint and star anise. Mint provides that clean, almost mentholated freshness, while star anise adds an aniseedy depth that borders on the medicinal. Together, they create a green, aromatic quality that feels simultaneously natural and uncanny. Iris adds a powdery softness that tempers the herbal intensity, while labdanum brings warmth and resinous depth to the base, an unexpected contrast that elevates the entire structure.
The evolution
The opening is bright and citrusy, bergamot dominates with black pepper adding spice. Within minutes, star anise and mint arrive as the heart, creating that cool-herbal sensation that defines the fragrance. Ginger and sage add warmth and earthiness, while iris brings a powdery floral quality that softens the edges. The drydown is where boxwood and labdanum take over, with green, leafy depth and warm, slightly resinous sweetness. The entire arc lasts 4-6 hours, settling from bright opener to quiet, intimate drydown.
Cultural impact
Mandragore has found its audience among fragrance enthusiasts who appreciate complexity over broad appeal. Its anise-forward character and the interplay between fresh mint and warm labdanum have earned it recognition as a distinctive Goutal fragrance, not a bestseller, but a cult favorite for those who seek something beyond the ordinary.
