The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Givenchy's Harvest collection operates on a simple premise: find the finest raw material of the year, then amplify an existing house fragrance with it. In 2010, that material was ylang-ylang from the island of Moheli in the Comoros. The harvest was exceptional, sunny, intense, with an exotic quality that recalled flambéed banana. Amarige, Givenchy's signature white floral, was the chosen vessel for this special edition. Released in 2011 as a limited edition, the Harvest 2010 Amarige Ylang Ylang took everything women already loved about the original and pushed the tropical intensity further. Not a reinvention. An intensification. The kind of move a couture house makes when it has something exceptional and knows exactly what to do with it.
What makes this edition distinctive is the source of its ylang-ylang. Moheli is one of the Comoros islands, a place where ylang-ylang trees grow in ideal conditions and the harvest carries a particular density, not just sweet, but warm in a way that suggests the fruit itself, not just the flower. The research mentions the banana flambé note, and that's not hyperbole: it's a real aromatic character in this specific material.
The evolution
The opening hits bright and citrus-forward, mandarin and neroli cutting through the heaviness to come. Orange blossom joins within minutes, adding a bitter-herbal edge that prevents the sweetness from overwhelming. Then the ylang-ylang takes over. It's not a gradual transition. One moment the citrus is leading, the next the tropical florals have claimed the composition entirely. Gardenia, mimosa, and tuberose layer in, creating a white floral thicket that smells rich, almost sticky, in the best possible way. The drydown takes its time, with the cedar and sandalwood eventually emerging through the powder as the florals slowly recede. Musk and tonka bean settle closest to the skin, leaving a warmth that lingers. The progression feels natural and intentional, each stage complementing the last, creating a fragrance that reveals itself in layers rather than all at once.
Cultural impact
The Harvest collection represents Givenchy's commitment to quality raw materials, presented as limited editions that showcase exceptional ingredients. The 2010 Amarige Ylang Ylang offers intensity and warmth, qualities that distinguish it from more conventional floral fragrances. It's a fragrance that rewards attention to its ingredients and patience with its opening, inviting wearers to discover how the composition unfolds over time.
