The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
El Primer Deseo translates to "The First Desire", named for that electric moment when attraction meets uncertainty. You're drawn to someone. You want to step closer. You're not sure how to behave in their company. Something brought you together, and the only way forward is to stop thinking and let yourself feel it. Yaroslav Simonov built this 2021 chypre around that tension: the contrast between cool citrus and elderflower at the opening, and the passionate embrace of guaiac, caramel, and leather at the base. The first desire is the feeling of wanting something you haven't yet earned.
The structure here is a study in controlled opposition. Cardamom and elderflower create a cooling effect, an almost astringent freshness that feels like the held breath before something happens. Against this, guaiac wood brings heat. Resinous, smoky, and just slightly tarry, it reads as warmth without sweetness. The caramel doesn't sweeten the composition so much as it softens the leather that follows, a rich, animalic accord that settles close to the skin. This is not a linear fragrance. It wants you to pay attention.
The evolution
The opening hits bright and immediate. Bergamot, mandarin, lime, a citrus burst that arrives without apology. Cardamom sharpens the edges. Elderflower cools it all down with an almost medicinal clarity. Then the transition begins. Carnation enters with its clove-like spiciness, but it's the black pepper and guaiac wood that shift the energy, from fresh to warm, from cool to intimate. The heart doesn't build so much as it deepens, settling into the warmth rather than announcing it. By the drydown, the leather has taken over. Not aggressive leather, intimate leather. Close to the skin. Sandalwood and patchouli underneath, with caramel lending a warmth that feels skin-like rather than sweet. The base lasts for hours. Not projecting anymore, but present. Still holding close even as the evening stretches on.
Cultural impact
El Primer Deseo has found its audience among wearers who appreciate bold, structured compositions, fragrances that reveal depth through restraint rather than volume. The scent draws those who want a fragrance that works on its own terms, confident enough to unfold quietly rather than announce itself. Its appeal lies in its refusal to compromise.
