The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Silver Words is a limited edition of the original CdG 2, launched in 2008. The concept draws from Japanese calligraphy, the art of inscribing meaning onto paper. Each letter carries weight, each word a message. The bottle itself bears inscriptions: love, peace, freedom, rendered in multiple languages through serigraphy. The fragrance translates that philosophy into scent. Every material has its place. Every note carries meaning.
Mark Buxton built this around a tension: light and shadow, silver and black, the written word and the ink that makes it permanent. The aldehydes aren't decorative, they're the light catching the page. The ink accord at the heart isn't metaphorical, it's the dark, inky depth that grounds the composition, the weight of what's written. Cedar and incense complete the picture: the ritual of writing, the permanence of what's left behind.
The evolution
The opening is bright. Aldehydes lift the mandarin, the tea, the mate, creating a waxy effervescence that evolves as the composition darkens. There's a sparkling quality to the top notes that gives way to something more contemplative. The heart arrives as ink: dark, with West Indian Bay's spice and nutmeg's warmth cutting through. Magnolia brings a brief floral softness before cinnamon and coriander add their own heat, creating a layered complexity. By the drydown, the aldehydes have surrendered entirely. Cedar takes over with its dry, woody presence. Incense breathes, spiritual, slightly smoky. Amber and patchouli warm everything from within, creating a lingering impression that rewards attention.
Cultural impact
Silver Words sits within CdG's conceptual fragrance tradition, the intellectual, artistic approach that prioritizes idea over convention. This is a fragrance for those who find meaning in the unconventional, who appreciate scent as a form of expression rather than mere decoration. The fragrance rewards patience and attention, revealing its layers slowly to those who take the time to discover them.
