The beginning
Happy Diamonds marked Chopard's debut in perfume, arriving in 1986 as the house's first scented expression. Creative director Caroline Scheufele wanted a scent that mirrored a precious stone set in 18-carat gold, translating the brilliance of a diamond into aroma. The Swiss house, founded in 1860, brought its jewelry-making precision to perfumery, creating a fragrance that sparkles with intention.
The note selection reflects a philosophy of contrast: bright citrus against deep animalics, delicate florals against resinous warmth. The bergamot and lemon open with crystalline clarity, suggesting the diamond's name sake brilliance. Orange blossom bridges the opening to heart with its honeyed floral character. In the base, benzoin and vanilla represent the precious resin quality one might find in fine jewelry settings, while civet provides the mysterious depth that elevates the composition beyond simple florals.
The evolution
The opening captures immediate brilliance, citrus oils evaporating quickly to reveal orange blossom's delicate floralcy within minutes. Galbanum's green quality provides contrast that makes the subsequent heart feel even more lush. By the time the heart develops, the citrus has softened, allowing jasmine and ylang-ylang to take center stage with their creamy, enveloping presence. Rose and heliotrope add nuanced sweetness while sandalwood begins building foundation. The transition to drydown occurs gradually over two hours as tube rose's richness mingles with iris's powdery trail.
