Haiku Limited Edition 2019 arrived as a festive twist on Avon's long-running Haiku line, a fragrance family built around clean, floral-soft compositions with a distinctly airy character. The 2019 edition leaned into the seasonal: a limited holiday release that swapped some of the original's warmer facets for something noticeably cooler and dewier, the kind of shift that makes an existing scent feel recalibrated rather than reinvented. On first spray, the top notes carry a bright, almost watery florality, with crisp green and fruity hints lifting the opening before the heart settles in.
What makes this release interesting is the tension between its fruity-citrus opening and its creamy, woody base. Yuzu and pomegranate are sharp, almost bracing notes, the kind that evaporate quickly on skin, yet they're paired here with a dense floral heart of tuberose, jasmine, and peony that anchors the composition with weight. The fig and kumquat add an unexpected green-fruitality, bridging the crisp top with the lush middle. It's a deliberate layering of textures: cold fruit over warm florals over soft sandalwood.
The evolution
The first fifteen minutes are all about clarity. Yuzu hits first, sharp and bright, followed almost immediately by the watery sweetness of pear and the tart snap of pomegranate. Freesia wraps around it like a cool ribbon. Nothing heavy. Nothing lingering. Then the white florals arrive, and the composition shifts noticeably warmer. Lily of the Valley and jasmine bring a soapy, almost powdery sweetness, while tuberose adds a creamy, almost tropical richness beneath. Peony and fig ground the heart with a green, slightly milky quality. This phase lasts roughly two hours, longer than you'd expect from such a clean-smelling fragrance. The drydown is where the composition earns its complexity. Sandalwood and vetiver create a soft, woody foundation. Vanilla and tonka bean add a subtle sweetness, and the musk brings everything close to skin. What remains after five or six hours is a warm, slightly powdery wood scent that clings to clothes and hair long after the fragrance itself has faded. The next morning, there's a faint trace of sandalwood on the pillow.
