The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Far Away Royale arrived in 2020 as part of Avon's Far Away collection, the brand's answer to wanderlust in a bottle. Perfumers Verônica Casanova and Jean-Marc Chaillan built this edition around a richer, more resinous brief than the original. The brief: translate the feeling of somewhere distant and warm into a scent that could survive a full workday and still be there when the evening called. Avon's accessibility-first philosophy meant the juice had to perform like it cost more than it did. Eight to ten hours of longevity became the target, not a happy accident. The perfumers worked with Natura & Co.'s resources to source materials that could deliver that kind of presence without the luxury markup.
The top trio, coriander extract, plum, and bergamot, is unusual. Coriander doesn't typically open a fragrance aimed at warmth and comfort; it adds a peppery, slightly sharp edge that makes the plum feel less like fruit and more like something with weight. Bergamot keeps the opening from becoming heavy, a brief citrus brightness before the white florals arrive. The heart, jasmine absolute, orange blossom, and Tunisian neroli, is where the fragrance earns its floral-oriental classification. Jasmine absolute brings depth that goes beyond fresh; orange blossom adds a soapy-clean brightness; neroli grounds both with a slightly bitter, waxy quality that stops the florals from becoming syrupy.
The evolution
The opening hits quickly, bergamot brightness for about ten minutes, then the coriander kicks in and the plum arrives in full. The first thirty minutes read as fruity, oriental, slightly spiced. A peppery warmth sits on top of the plum like a hand warming a glass. Around the forty-minute mark, the white florals take over from the top notes. Jasmine and orange blossom arrive without fanfare, the bergamot fades, the coriander settles, and what remains is a warm floral heart that smells nothing like the opening. The drydown is where Far Away Royale earns its reputation. Vanilla and myrrh arrive together around the two-hour mark, and they don't leave. The Peru balsam adds a sticky, resinous quality that makes the vanilla feel almost tactile, not sweet in a candy way, but sweet in the way warm skin smells after coming in from the cold. On most skin types, this base holds for six to eight hours. On fabric, it can last into the next day.
Cultural impact
Far Away Royale launched in 2020 as part of Avon's strategic expansion of their Far Away collection, targeting fragrance enthusiasts who want accessible luxury. The 2020 release brought sophisticated oriental perfumery to drugstore shelves, challenging the assumption that warm vanilla and balsamic compositions require premium investment. Community response has been substantial, with over 1,000 user ratings and active discussion across fragrance forums, indicating genuine cultural traction among collectors and newcomers alike. Avon positioned Far Away Royale as a bridge between mass-market accessibility and aspirational scent profiles, using coriander, plum, and bergamot to create an approachable entry point into oriental fragrance territory.
