The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Ca' Luna belongs to the I Luoghi Biellesi collection, a series of fragrances named after specific places in the Piedmont region. The name itself means something like 'the moon over the house,' and the the community description paints a picture of an old country estate where time has slowed: walls covered in silver ivy, nights silent except for distant bells, moonlight through old windows. Maurizio Cerizza composed Ca' Luna in 2007 with this setting in mind, treating the fragrance less as an abstract perfume and more as a kind of sensory restoration of a real place.
The uncommon materials set Ca' Luna apart from mainstream aromatic fragrances. Galbanum, a green resin with a sharp, almost fennel-like quality, is rarely used as a main accord. Mastic adds Mediterranean warmth and a faint piney edge. Together with ivy, these create an opening that reads as botanical rather than citrus or floral. The elemi resin in the heart contributes a citrusy-balsamic complexity that bridges the green opening and the warm base. The white pepper and rum feel almost incidental, spice and spirit that give the heart dimension without overwhelming the composition's essential restraint.
The evolution
The opening arrives crisp and green. Galbanum announces itself first, that sharp verdant edge that cuts the air like morning in a damp garden. Mastic follows with resinous warmth, then ivy climbs in, green without being aggressive. Ten minutes in, the heart begins to unfold. Elemi brings a subtle citrus-balsamic lift, almost like incense without smoke. White pepper adds clean heat. The rum deepens everything, warm and slightly sweet, though never heavy. By the second hour, the drydown takes over. Leather emerges first, worn leather, not new, the kind that belongs to old gloves. Sandalwood softens and adds cream. Musk lingers in the background, skin-close. The overall impression settles into something quiet, woody, and familiar. On fabric, the leather note intensifies and lasts longer than on skin. The fragrance holds a 6-8 hour arc, intimate throughout, never projecting far from the wearer.
Cultural impact
Ca' Luna occupies a quiet corner of niche perfumery, a green-woody composition from 2007 that hasn't changed because it doesn't need to. The restraint and the place-specific naming fit a brand that has always operated outside trend cycles. For those exploring beyond mass-market aromatic fragrances, the galbanum-mastic-elemi combination offers something genuinely different.
