The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Alienor Massenet's assignment was simple on paper: capture what gold smells like. Not metaphorically, literally. She built the opening around Madagascan cinnamon, bergamot, and a candied plum molecule that reads as both sharp and sweet. The heart stacks tobacco, violet, and jasmine. The base anchors everything in labdanum, vanilla, and patchouli. Released in 2018, Scent of Gold translates the sensory essence of the material itself into fragrance form, treating opulence as a composition problem rather than an exercise in volume.
The tobacco and violet pairing is the real differentiator here. Tobacco gives weight and a natural sweetness that can tip into medicinal if miscalculated. Violet counterbalances with powdery floral elegance. Jasmine bridges both without letting either dominate. The candied plum molecule, Symris Noir Prunol D, adds a modern sweetness that distinguishes this from classic oriental templates. Labdanum grounds the drydown with a resinous amber quality, vanilla brings warmth and creaminess, and patchouli keeps everything earthy rather than abstract. This is a fragrance built for those who want warmth without sweetness fatigue.
The evolution
The opening carries bergamot and cinnamon arriving together, the bergamot lifting the spice just enough to keep it from overwhelming. The candied plum adds a sweet counterpoint that softens the edges. The heart takes over with tobacco leading, and it is a substantial tobacco, not a whisper. Violet and jasmine follow, adding floral elegance that prevents the composition from becoming too heavy. The drydown is where this fragrance earns its name. Vanilla and patchouli arrive, the vanilla sweet and creamy, the patchouli earthy and grounding. Labdanum adds a warm amber quality that ties everything together. The overall evolution moves from brightness through depth to warmth, with each phase shading into the next rather than making abrupt transitions. Sillage shifts from present to intimate as the fragrance settles, and the aromatic narrative remains cohesive throughout wear.
Cultural impact
Scent of Gold represents a particular point in Trussardi's fragrance strategy, released in 2018 with a composition that offers complexity at accessible price points. The tobacco-violet heart has become a distinguishing feature for those who appreciate this style of fragrance, where floral elegance tempers the earthiness of the tobacco note. Wearers drawn to this scent tend to value the way these contrasting elements interact, finding in the heart something more layered than typical tobacco-forward compositions.
