The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Trussardi built its identity on an uncompromising relationship with leather. The brand's leather goods legacy translates into a fragrance philosophy that treats leather not as a passing note but as a foundation. Behind The Curtain Piazza Alla Scala belongs to the Le Vie di Milano collection, a series named for the hidden corners and grand public spaces of Milan. The reference to Piazza alla Scala, Milan's opera house, brings red velvet and hushed anticipation into the equation. Behind that curtain lies backstage intensity, not merely sophistication.
The note selection reflects a deliberate philosophy. Clove and saffron in the opening are not merely spices but architectural choices, creating warmth that justifies the leather's arrival. Labdanum bridges the transition, its resinous amber quality harmonizing with both the spice above and the woods below. Cypriol in the base is a statement choice, less common than oud or vetiver and lending a smoky, almost leathery earthiness that reinforces the leather character from a different angle. The pairing of cedarwood and sandalwood provides the drydown's woody framework, dry and creamy respectively, creating balance between the two wood archetypes.
The evolution
The opening deploys bergamot, clove, and saffron in quick succession. Bergamot provides the initial citrus spark, fleeting but necessary before clove and saffron establish a warm, spicy, almost resinous character that announces the fragrance's intentions. As bergamot fades within the first minutes, the heart begins its slow emergence. Leather arrives with conviction, but it is immediately shaped by labdanum's amber warmth and juniper's sharp, green complexity. Jasmine adds a whisper of floral softness that prevents the leather from becoming aggressive. The drydown is where the composition earns its complexity. Cypriol introduces a dark, smoky, almost medicinal earthiness that grounds everything. Sandalwood and cedarwood layer in creamy and dry woody textures, while patchouli extends the drydown with its characteristic loamy depth. Leather persists throughout, a thread that ties opening to drydown.
Cultural impact
Part of Trussardi's Le Vie di Milano collection, which draws inspiration from the sensory landscape of Milan. Each scent in the collection corresponds to a specific location, whether squares, streets, or hidden corners, with Behind The Curtain occupying the liminal space of performance: the moment before the lights dim, the preparation backstage, what the audience never sees. The fragrance appeals to wearers who appreciate leather's more challenging qualities, its animalic edge, its association with skin and warmth, its refusal to be merely decorative.
