Why it exists.
The beginning
Pure OUDdiction is The Gate Fragrances Paris exploring the nature of compulsion itself. Part of the 2018 Caravan Collection, four fragrances built around the idea of reaching for something just out of grasp, Pure OUDdiction takes its name literally. An oud addiction. The kind that starts quietly and never quite lets go. Valerie Garnuch-Mentzel composed this one around a dried hemp accord as anchor, layered with the sharp green bite of mate and the warmth of cardamom. The Caravan Collection draws from Middle Eastern aromatic traditions filtered through a modern lens, and this fragrance embodies that tension: ancient materials, contemporary restraint.
What makes Pure OUDdiction distinctive is the balance, the hemp accord doesn't announce itself with the bluntness of a blunt or the skunk of recreational cannabis. It's aromatic and green, almost herbaceous, woven through the top like a thread the composition can't do without. The suede in the heart adds a tactile quality, the kind of softness that suggests something well-used rather than new. The oud doesn't dominate. It arrives late and stays longer than anything else, grounding the herbal brightness into something that reads as warmth rather than shock.
The evolution
The opening is assertive. Sage cuts through the mate, cardamom adds spice, and the hemp accord gives it an aromatic edge that some wearers describe as medicinal before it softens. Thirty minutes in, the heart takes over, hay and suede arrive together, a countryside warmth that tempers the green sharpness. Licorice drops in quietly, adding a faint sweetness that keeps the suede from reading as harsh. As the heart matures, the herbal quality deepens, revealing a nuanced interplay between the grassy mate and the warm, leathery suede that feels both grounded and sophisticated. The drydown is where the oud finally speaks. Vetiver and patchouli hold it close, musk adds skin warmth, and the smoky quality that defined the base notes becomes the dominant impression. On fabric, it lingers into the next day, faint, resinous, and distinctly oudy.
Cultural impact
Pure OUDdiction carves out a distinct space among niche oud fragrances, steering away from the heavy, animalic oud trope in favor of something more restrained. Wearers describe it as an oud for people who find traditional oud compositions too dense.
