The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Valerie Garnuch-Mentzel created the original Oud Tonic in 2018. The name says it: a tonic, something restorative, something that cuts through what came before. The fragrance opens with a sharp burst of citrus that immediately commands attention, a bright and unexpected beginning that sets the tone for everything that follows. There's an immediacy to the top notes, a clarity that feels like a reset button for the senses. As the scent begins to breathe on the skin, the citrus doesn't simply disappear, it softens, becomes a supporting element rather than the lead. The heart notes then emerge with quiet confidence: vetiver's earthy green presence, frankincense smoke that curls upward without aggression, clove and saffron adding warmth that feels amber rather than hot.
The Extrait concentration elevates what was already there. On skin, the juniper berries and lime create an immediate brightness that doesn't feel like a trick or a tease. It's the real opening act. The heart notes then build slowly: vetiver's earthy green, frankincense smoke curling upward, clove and saffron adding warmth that feels almost red. The oud in the base asserts itself with presence, dark and resinous, while cedar and black leather anchor the composition. Musk adds a clean warmth that keeps everything close to skin.
The evolution
The opening is a jolt of clarity, juniper berries and lime zest hit first, bright and almost astringent in the best way. Mandarin adds a softer citrus note underneath, and the pear blossom keeps things from sharpening into perfume territory. It's the scent of a window opened in a room that had been closed too long. Twenty minutes in, the heart begins its slow arrival. Saffron and clove arrive quietly at first, then frankincense smoke starts to curl through, mixing with vetiver's earthy green. The transition isn't dramatic, it happens while you're paying attention to something else. By the thirty-minute mark, the citrus has receded and the smoky warmth has taken hold. The drydown is where Oud Tonic earns its name. The oud doesn't arrive all at once, it deepens gradually, wrapping around cedar and black leather until the composition becomes something entirely different from what opened. Musk holds everything together, keeping the darkness close to skin rather than projecting outward.
Cultural impact
Oud Tonic Extrait de Parfum belongs to a broader moment in fragrance culture where smoky oriental compositions have moved from niche circles into wider awareness. The composition itself, a tension between cool citrus opening and dark resin base, positions it as something that speaks to this shift without chasing it. It occupies a space that feels both contemporary and grounded, appealing to those who want complexity over simplicity.
