The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Cécile Matton composed Black Musk Night Bloom in 2018, working within a vegan formulation to shape a fragrance that feels substantial rather than fleeting. The composition pairs gourmand warmth with grounded patchouli, leaning on dark base materials rather than just precious materials. The result lives at the intersection of edible richness and rooty depth, a scent designed to feel present rather than decorative, holding its own in the hours when a sheer floral would vanish into the air.
What separates this from a standard fruity-floral is the way bright top notes and a dark, resinous base sit alongside each other. Pineapple and red berries bring the opening energy, but ylang-ylang and heliotrope at the heart keep things soft rather than sharp. The black musk anchors the structure, and vanilla and patchouli settle into a drydown that reads more like fabric than fruit. It's a composition that rewards patience, when the woods settle in and the berries recede into something quieter and more grounded.
The evolution
The opening minutes belong to pineapple and red berries, sweet and slightly fizzy, with black pepper threading underneath like a warning that this won't stay light. As the fruit softens, ylang-ylang and rose push forward, creamy and a little powdery from the heliotrope, and the pepper mellows into something warm rather than sharp. The base gradually asserts itself over the first couple of hours. Black musk, patchouli, and vanilla blend into a skin-close hum, with sandalwood and cedar holding the shape underneath. As the scent settles, it stays close to the body, and the woods continue to deepen while the berries fade into memory, leaving a warmer, more resinous impression than the opening promised.
Cultural impact
Within The Body Shop's lineup, Black Musk Night Bloom occupies the warmer, more grown-up register, described as the fiercer sister to the lighter White Musk range. Its appeal sits with wearers who want their florals to carry some weight and who appreciate gourmand-adjacent scents without going full dessert. The community conversation often returns to the pineapple note, which adds a needed lift to an otherwise grounded composition and keeps the dark musk from pulling too heavy.
