The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Terry de Gunzburg built a career on transformation, makeup first, then fragrance. By 2017 she'd spent years translating runway instinct into scent, each release a proof that perfume could command a room the way a bold lip does. Délectation Splendide arrived that year as the house's most unabashed oriental-gourmand: a fragrance named for pleasure itself, built to reward the wearer willing to commit to it fully.
What makes this composition work is the tension between sharp and soft. Tobacco leaf opens with herbaceous, slightly bitter edges, but the heart, plum and praline, cuts in with sweetness that refuses to be polite. Moroccan rose adds a floral lift that keeps the gourmand notes from feeling heavy. It's a composition that understands contrast: the spice keeps the sweetness honest, the sweetness keeps the spice from being aggressive. The result is an oriental that wears its richness without suffocating.
The evolution
The opening hits bold. Tobacco leaf and ginger arrive together, aromatic, almost medicinal in the best way, with black pepper and anise threading through the sharpness. Lemon appears briefly, a flash of citrus that doesn't soften anything, just adds brightness before it burns off. Within twenty minutes the heart takes over: plum and rose, praline and almond. The sweetness deepens, becomes almost jammy. The tobacco doesn't disappear, it settles, becomes part of the foundation. By the second hour the drydown arrives: Madagascar vanilla, benzoin, Indonesian patchouli. Cinnamon lingers longest, warm and resinous, wrapping around skin like a second layer. On most this holds for a full workday and into the evening. Projection softens after the first hour but never disappears entirely.
Cultural impact
By Terry built its reputation on bringing runway fashion into accessible luxury skincare and cosmetics. Délectation Splendide, launched in 2017, represents the house's most unabashed entry into the oriental-gourmand space. The plum and Moroccan rose heart set this apart from typical tobacco fragrances, adding a jammy floral quality. Warm vanilla and rich amber weave through the composition, creating depth that feels both indulgent and refined. The tobacco note provides a dry, slightly smoky backbone that prevents the sweetness from overwhelming, while the rose adds a velvety softness that elevates the overall blend.
