The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The name says it all. Be Mine arrived in 2019 from Terry de Gunzburg, the French makeup artist. The fragrance carries a directness that matches its title, named like a command rather than a question. The fruity-spicy opening makes an immediate impression, bright and lively, while the dark rose heart brings warmth and depth. Together these elements create a scent that feels confident and assertive, seduction that doesn't wait to be reciprocated. The combination of bright top notes and a richer floral core gives the fragrance an interesting tension, something that opens boldly and settles into something more complex. It's the kind of fragrance that announces itself without apology, and that quality seems built into every layer of its composition.
The composition builds tension through layered contrasts that keep the wearer engaged. Raspberry's brightness plays against black pepper's spice in the opening, creating an immediate dynamic that feels energetic. The heart then introduces Damask rose and iris, where rose brings warmth and iris brings powder, two directions that pull against each other but somehow coexist. The base layers leather with saffron, a combination where leather adds an animalic quality and saffron adds warmth, while patchouli grounds both in earthier territory.
The evolution
First spray: raspberry pops bright and cold, like the air before a crowded room. Within moments, black pepper arrives, not aggressive but definitely present, adding heat that makes the fruit smell sharper and more electric. This bright opening holds for a while before the rose begins to rise through it, emerging from underneath the fruity top notes like something that was waiting for its moment. As time passes, the damask rose asserts itself fully, thick with petals, while iris dusts everything with powder. The saffron starts to warm the composition, threading gold through the heart. The leather makes its presence known gradually, becoming more prominent as the fragrance develops. By the time the drydown settles, leather, patchouli, and saffron form a warm, close, almost smoky foundation.
Cultural impact
Be Mine occupies a distinctive space in the fragrance landscape: rose-forward but not precious, leather-driven but not heavy. The combination of dark rose with leather creates something that feels bold without becoming aggressive. The raspberry opening keeps the composition from feeling too austere, adding brightness that balances the deeper elements. There's an interesting push and pull throughout the fragrance, where different notes assert themselves and then recede. Some wearers find it unexpectedly compelling, others find it takes some getting used to.
