The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Habano Vanilla emerged from ArteOlfatto's 2013 debut, when perfumer Luigi Nappo wanted to capture the smoky allure of a Cuban cigar wrapped in sweet, sun‑kissed vanilla. The name Habano points to the classic Habano leaf, while Vanilla signals the gourmand heart. Drawing on the house's Italian craft tradition, Nappo structured the opening around vivid ginger and carnation to evoke the sensory immediacy of unlit tobacco leaves being crushed between fingers, then layered in tobacco and coriander to build the tactile heart before softening into vanilla and tolu balsam at the base.
ArteOlfatto builds its scents around the tension between opposing forces, and Habano Vanilla is no exception. The choice of ginger and carnation for the opening serves a specific purpose: these notes create an immediate sensory jolt that demands attention before yielding to the more seductive tobacco heart. Coriander bridges the gap between the spiced opening and the rich base, adding an aromatic dimension that prevents the fragrance from feeling purely smoky or purely sweet. The tolu balsam and tonka bean in the drydown are not incidental additions but deliberate tools to soften the tobacco's edges and extend the vanilla's presence, creating a finish that feels both warm and refined.
The evolution
The fragrance opens with a burst of ginger and cinnamon, a bright, spiced exclamation that establishes immediate presence. Carnation tempers the sharpness with its warm, clove‑like floral signature, giving the top notes a softer landing. As the first minutes pass, tobacco rises as the dominant force, taking over from the spices with its earthy, cured character. Coriander arrives to offer lift and contrast, its cool, slightly citrusy herbaceousness keeping the heart dynamic rather than monolithic. The drydown marks the final transformation: vanilla takes over as the primary impression, joined by tolu balsam's honeyed, balsamic depth and tonka bean's sweet, coumarin warmth, all anchored by woody notes that ensure the scent remains close to the skin but unmistakable in its identity.
Cultural impact
Habano Vanilla by ArteOlfatto weaves tog ether a rich blend of cultural references, drawing on the historic trade routes that carried cinnamon from Sri Lanka, vanilla from the Americas, and carnation from the Mediterranean. These ingredients have long been symbols of hospitality and celebration in many societies. The fragrance captures the warmth of Caribbean evenings, the spice‑laden markets of the Middle East, and the refined elegance of European courts, reflecting how scent can bridge continents and eras. Its composition honors traditional uses of vanilla in ceremonial desserts while modernizing the profile with ginger’s bright edge, making it a contemporary homage to centuries of aromatic heritage.
