The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Benoît Bergia designed Herbe Zen for Solinotes in 2023. The brief was straightforward: a green aromatic intended as an invitation to well-being and meditation. Bergia anchored the composition in mint and blackcurrant bud, two ingredients with strong vegetal character, then reinforced them with a cedar-sandalwood base that brings warmth to the cooling green structure. The interplay between these elements creates a fragrance that feels both invigorating and calming, a study in botanical balance that invites the wearer into a quiet moment of reflection.
The artemisia, known elsewhere as mugwort, brings a bitter-green, almost medicinal quality that lifts the composition away from sweet florals and into more austere territory. The poppy and rose in the heart are supporting players, adding a whisper of softness that prevents the herbs from dominating entirely. Blackcurrant blossom functions as an aromatic note rather than a fruity one, contributing a green, slightly sharp facet rather than sweetness. The cooling mint opening gives way to a warming woody base, creating a dynamic fragrance that moves between opposing sensory territories.
The evolution
The opening hits immediately, mint and green notes that are crisp and clean. Blackcurrant blossom adds a herbal facet that reads more green than fruity. As the mint softens, the heart opens with artemisia asserting its bitter-green authority. The poppy and rose provide just enough softness to prevent austerity from taking over. Cedar gradually becomes more present, pushing the composition toward its woody drydown. Sandalwood joins, then white amber and musk, creating a warm, powdery base that lingers close to the skin. The drydown settles into a quiet, intimate finish, a gentle warmth that remains with the wearer.
Cultural impact
Herbe Zen occupies a distinctive niche in the green aromatic category. The composition leans into fougère territory with its artemisia-mint structure, presenting a modern, cleaner interpretation of classic herbal scents. This fragrance offers something for those seeking green notes that go beyond the ordinary, a scent that feels considered and intentional rather than simply another addition to the genre.
