The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Eric Fracapane created Fleur d'Iris in 2014. The opening pairs angelica seed with mandarin to keep things cool and transparent, a deliberate choice that sets a crisp, airy tone. As the fragrance develops, the iris takes its place in the heart, powdery in character but lifted by accords that give it air. The frankincense in the heart adds a faint resinous warmth rather than smoke, keeping the overall feel clean and refined throughout. The structure allows the iris to emerge without obstruction, inviting the wearer to notice how the flower breathes within the composition rather than being buried beneath heavier elements.
Fleur d'Iris takes a different approach. The angelica seed does the quiet work of keeping things cool and clean in the opening, while mandarin adds a brief citrus lift that never lets the fragrance settle into anything heavy. This is iris presented without weight, powdery in character but lifted by accords that give it air. The frankincense in the heart adds a faint resinous warmth rather than smoke, keeping the overall feel clean and refined throughout.
The evolution
Fleur d'Iris opens cool. Mandarin and angelica arrive crisp and fleeting before the iris takes its place. Once established, the heart unfolds quietly: violet adds a soft powdery sweetness, cedar provides structure without heaviness, and frankincense threads through as a whisper of something warm beneath. The handoff to base notes happens gradually. Heliotrope brings its almond-tinged softness, musk stays close to the skin, teakwood adds a faint woody warmth, and tonka bean absolute brings a creamy finish that rounds everything out. The drydown is intimate and clean, a fragrance that wears close with moderate sillage throughout. On skin and fabric alike, the scent lingers at moderate length, its presence felt for several hours before gradually fading. The trace that remains is soft and familiar.
Cultural impact
Fleur d'Iris occupies a distinctive space in the landscape of iris fragrances. Rather than falling into the extremes of heavy, powdery compositions or whisper-light skin scents, it presents something refined and measured. The transparency of the iris here sets it apart from denser interpretations, offering a version of the note that feels both established and airy. For those approaching powdery florals, this scent provides an accessible entry point that does not sacrifice sophistication. Its clean character makes it versatile enough to appeal to a broad range of preferences.
