Why it exists.
The beginning
Essence Rare arrived in 2020 from the house of Pierre de Velay, composed by Roja Dove himself. The fragrance was conceived to capture something rare, a quality that resists easy imitation. Part of the Pierre de Velay collection, it sits within a body of work built on material richness. The composition reads less as something to wear casually and more as an electric presence, something that announces itself on the skin. The bottle presents the composition with confidence, its weight and the density of the juice inside signalling the seriousness of the project.
What makes Essence Rare structurally interesting is the tension between its fruity opening and its deeply classical chypre foundation. The raspberry and blood orange that open the fragrance anchor into a base of moss, patchouli, and labdanum that belongs to an older perfumery vocabulary, the sort of language spoken in mid-century compositions where chypres reigned supreme. The rose-violet-jasmine heart borrows from the grand floral tradition, and its handling pulls the whole architecture into something fresh without sacrificing depth.
The evolution
The first thirty minutes belong to blackcurrant and blood orange, vivid and almost edible. Raspberry layers in sweetness without weight. Then the shift comes: rose and jasmine rise through the citrus brightness, violet powdering the edges. The heart is unmistakably floral but never fragile, it has backbone. By the two-hour mark, the chypre architecture takes over. Moss, patchouli, and vetiver settle into the composition with the gravity of old-school perfumery, while sandalwood and cedar soften the edges. Labdanum and saffron glow underneath, warm and resinous. The musk arrives last, clean and close to skin. Through the later hours, the composition settles into a quieter register, and the interplay between the mossy-patchouli base and the softer woods and resins becomes more pronounced.
