The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Parfum de la Nuit No 1, released in 2015 as part of The Prestige Collection, was conceived to embody the night itself, not as a literal representation but as an emotional state. The name translates directly to 'Perfume of the Night,' and the brief centered on capturing what emerges when darkness falls and social facades dissolve. Bergamot provides the initial brightness, but the true architecture consists of guaiac wood, papyrus, cedar, vetiver, and patchouli, materials that evoke smoke, earth, and shadow. The addition of clove and saffron introduces an unexpected intensity, a calculated provocation within what might otherwise read as a traditional oriental composition. This is the uninhabited self, made olfactory.
The true distinction lies in the base. Castoreum and civet bring animalic warmth, skin, rendered more alive than actual skin. Most modern fragrances either sidestep these materials or bury them so deep they become background noise. Here, they anchor the composition, providing a foundation that reads as raw sensuality without tipping into aggression. Benzoin, tolu balsam, styrax, and labdanum contribute a sticky, balsamic sweetness, but the vanilla and tonka bean prevent it from becoming medicinal or overwrought. The combination is unusual in contemporary perfumery, where restraint often reads as sophistication. Parfum de la Nuit No 1 refuses that compromise.
The evolution
Bergamot opens with immediate brightness, a citrus spark that dissipates faster than expected. Within minutes, the heart arrives. Guaiac wood and papyrus create a smoky, tar-like presence, while cedar and vetiver ground it with earth and a subtle mineral quality. The clove and saffron don't announce themselves so much as ambush, the saffron especially reads as slightly medicinal before settling into the composition. This middle phase dominates, dense and warm and utterly confident, with the woody elements weaving through the spices creating an intricate tapestry of scent that evolves continuously. As the composition progresses, animalic notes begin to emerge as the woods recede, civet and castoreum rising to the surface. These blend with vanilla and tonka bean, creating something that smells like skin but better, warmer, sweeter, more alive.
Cultural impact
Parfum de la Nuit No 1 occupies a distinctive space among resinous, animalic orientals. Wearers who understand it tend to become advocates, the exceptional longevity and bold sillage make it ideal for cooler months and evening wear. The civet-castoreum combination is either its defining strength or its polarizing element, depending on who you ask. It's the kind of fragrance that sparks conversation, which in niche perfumery, counts as its own kind of success.
