The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Amaranto comes from Mutis Nueva Granada, a house based in Colombia. Released in 2021, it was composed by Dominique Moellhausen with the goal of capturing the character of green highland plateaus in scent form. The composition leans on florals and fruits to carry the impression of an open landscape, rooted firmly in materials that smell of soil and stone as much as bloom. Moellhausen works with an evident respect for raw botanical material, allowing individual notes to retain their natural edges rather than smoothing them into something purely ornamental. The result is a fragrance that reads as terrain, layered and specific, where greenery and grounded warmth share the same space without one overwhelming the other.
What makes Amaranto interesting is the pairing at its core. Taif rose is among the most luxurious florals a perfumer can reach for, yet here it sits beside fig and leather, materials far earthier and more grounded. Cypriol, a root often called nagarmotha, pulls the heart downward into something smoky and mineral. Vanilla softens the edges without sweetening the composition into something safe. The interplay between rose and fig creates a curious tension: the rose brings warmth and a hint of jam, while the fig cuts in with green sweetness, keeping the florals honest.
The evolution
The first hour is the most floral phase. Taif rose opens with a warm, almost jammy presence, fig lending its green-sweet lift, leather sitting underneath like a second skin. Nothing here announces itself loudly. The sillage stays close, a personal cloud rather than a room filler. Around the two-hour mark the heart begins to shift. Cypriol deepens, orchid adds a creamy shadow, and the vanilla starts to register as warmth rather than sweetness. By hour four the florals have mostly retreated. What remains is amber, amyris, moss, and white musk, a base of damp earth and clean skin. The transition feels organic, like watching a landscape shift from midday brightness into cooler evening air. Each phase reveals a different facet without losing the thread of what came before.
Cultural impact
Amaranto was released in 2021 as part of the brand's initial lineup. The fragrance positions itself firmly in the niche perfumery space, offering something that feels studied and deliberate rather than mass-market in sensibility. It wears like a regional study, composed with attention to how scent can carry geographic specificity. The audience it tends to attract values fragrance that evokes place, favoring depth and character over louder, more attention-grabbing compositions. Its presence in the niche market reflects a broader appetite for perfumes that prioritize authenticity and material integrity.
