The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Found at Dusk arrived in 2021 as part of Miller Harris's FOUND series. Blackcurrant jam sits at the center of the composition, its dense, almost fermented sweetness anchoring the opening in something fruity and slightly cooked. The note behaves like a spoonful of preserves left on the counter, sticky and warm, with that distinctive sharpness that comes from fruit pushed past its raw stage. Around it, the composition builds layers that shift between green and resinous, never letting the jam turn cloying. It's a scent that holds its composure without telling you what to feel about it. The fragrance carries a quiet confidence in its structure, each note placed with intention, and the overall impression is one of a moment suspended rather than a story imposed.
The pairing of blackcurrant absolute with blackcurrant jam is unusual and deliberate. The absolute gives a clean, almost wine-like tartness, while the jam brings a cooked, slightly sticky sweetness that feels homemade. Layering them both creates depth that reads as both fresh fruit and something already turned toward autumn. Surrounding them with balsam fir and bourbon vanilla adds a resinous warmth that keeps the sweetness from drifting toward confection. The result is a green-fruity composition with enough wood and ambergris to give it weight.
The evolution
The first ten minutes are all about confrontation. Bergamot, basil, and lime land first, sharp and herbal with a pepper edge that makes you pay attention. Spearmint threads through, adding something cool and almost toothpaste-fresh before the fruit steps in. Blackcurrant dominates the heart phase, absolute and jam working in parallel. One minute it's a wine glass of cassis, the next it's something closer to preserves on warm toast. Tomato leaf and geranium keep the green notes alive underneath, preventing the composition from going syrupy. The raspberry softens things at the edges. As the hours pass, the woods begin to surface more prominently. Balsam fir moves forward with a clean evergreen character, and bourbon vanilla sweetens the base without dominating. Ambergris adds a mineral saltiness that prevents the warmth from becoming heavy.
Cultural impact
Found at Dusk reads as a fragrance for someone who wants their perfume to suggest rather than announce. The green-fruity accord with balsamic fir gives it a distinctively British hedgerow character, the kind of scent that brings to mind overgrown gardens and fruit-laden branches. Wearers tend to be the type who choose a fragrance for what it evokes rather than what it projects, people who appreciate a composition that holds something back. The blackcurrant-heavy heart sets it apart from the typical fruit-forward fragrances, which often lean purely sweet.
