The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Tender arrived in 2018 as part of Miller Harris's Scherzo and Tender collection, a companion to the rose-focused Scherzo. Where Scherzo explores silence and restraint, Tender leans into vulnerability and warmth. Bertrand Duchaufour crafted both as a study in contrast, floral tenderness against warm spice, delicate opening against a grounded drydown. The collection reflects the house's commitment to narrative-driven scent: each fragrance tells a story, and Tender's is about the softness that survives after the bright notes fade. Miller Harris gives perfumers full artistic freedom, and that philosophy shows here, this isn't a fragrance designed to perform in a room. It's designed to stay close.
The structure is unusual. Aldehydes typically signal crisp elegance, think Chanel No. 5, but here they open something sharper, almost metallic. Duchaufour uses them to lift the green hyacinth and pink pepper into an effervescent brightness that sets up the real story: Turkish rose absolute meeting black tulip, an unexpected gothic note that adds darkness to the florals. The saffron heart bridges everything, warm and resinous, pulling the composition toward leather and myrrh in the base. What makes Tender distinctive is that intimacy isn't an accident, it's baked in. The sillage stays moderate, the projection close. You wear it, it doesn't announce you.
The evolution
The opening sparkles. Aldehydes hit first, bright, effervescent, almost champagne-like, before the green hyacinth and pink pepper arrive to cool things down. The transition feels deliberate: pink pepper's delicate spice, hyacinth's dewy freshness, then the warmth of cinnamon arriving early as a bridge. The heart is where Tender earns its name. Turkish rose absolute takes center stage, but it's black tulip that adds the twist, something darker, almost gothic, beneath the peony and cyclamen. The florals are simultaneously lush and grounded, warm and cool. The drydown is where Tender becomes itself. Saffron lingers longest, the bridge between florals and base. Leather, myrrh, and patchouli anchor the composition while amber, sandalwood, and vanilla absolute wrap around them. Cedarwood and frankincense resin add woody depth. Musk brings an almost waxy, intimate warmth. It's rich, warm, and close. Lasts 8-10 hours on most skin types. Close from start to finish.
Cultural impact
Tender fits within the Miller Harris collection of narrative-driven scents that reward close attention rather than broad appeal. It's the kind of fragrance that attracts people who find poetry in everyday rituals, sophisticated without being obvious, intimate without being invisible. The warm spice and leather make it particularly suited for cooler seasons and evening wear. Moderate sillage means it stays close, making it a strong choice for date nights or quiet dinners rather than large gatherings.
