Why it exists.
The beginning
Scherzo is Miller Harris doing what Miller Harris does best, finding a story worth telling and giving a perfumer the space to tell it. The 2018 launch draws from a passage in F. Scott Fitzgerald's Tender is the Night. Mathieu Nardin translated that literary intensity into a fragrance that moves through multiple registers: bright, floral, warm, persistent. The Scherzo Collection, scherzo meaning a playful musical movement, takes its name from composition, from the idea that a fragrance, like music, can shift tempo and mood without losing its thread. The collection follows a house tradition of scent-as-narrative.
What makes Scherzo interesting isn't any single note, it's the combination of ethyl maltol with black rose and oud. Ethyl maltol is the molecule behind cotton candy, that burnt-sugar sweetness that shows up in food flavouring. Used in perfumery, it softens harsh edges and adds a caramel warmth that makes florals feel edible rather than precious. Here it's paired with black rose, not a literal damask but a concept, a rose that carries weight, and a calibrated oud that provides depth without the medicinal screech some people find off-putting. The davana in the opening is the wildcard: an herb from the Artemisia family that smells slightly absinthe-like, bitter and green.
The evolution
The opening is quick. Tangerine and davana arrive together, citrus brightness immediately complicated by something herbal, almost anise-adjacent. Thirty seconds in, you forget the opening happened. The florals take over, peony first, then black rose, then the jonquil threading through like a quiet yellow note. This middle phase is where most people fall in love with the scent. It's lush without being heavy, sweet without being juvenile. The frankincense appears here too, not as smoke but as a resinous warmth that keeps the florals from floating away. The drydown is where the oud earns its place. It's not the oud of a leather jacket or a incense chamber, it's oud softened by ethyl maltol and vanilla, warm and slightly caramelised, with patchouli providing the earthiness that stops it from feeling like a dessert.
