The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Scherzo draws its name and spirit from F. Scott Fitzgerald's Tender is the Night, a novel about glamour, obsession, and the slow unraveling of a beautiful thing. Miller Harris released it in 2018 with perfumer Mathieu Nardin translating Fitzgerald's prose into scent. The brief wasn't subtle: capture colour, capture sweetness. Nardin built a fragrance that carries bold entrance, layered meaning, an ending that lingers differently than the beginning. It's a composition that moves through stages, each one distinct yet connected to the last, like chapters in a story you don't want to end. The name itself, borrowed from musical terminology suggesting a lively movement, hints at the playful complexity within the bottle.
The note structure is built around contrast. Tangerine and artemisia open sharp, almost bitter, a deliberate counterweight to the sweetness that follows. Then the florals arrive: black rose, peony, narcissus, and pittosporum all present in the composition. It's not a simple bouquet but something more intricate, where each floral voice contributes to the overall effect. The base adds oud, patchouli, and vanilla to ground the composition. Ethyl maltol provides a sweet element that connects the different phases, preventing the florals from floating away entirely.
The evolution
The opening hits with a citrus burst, tangerine with an herbal bite from the artemisia. Scherzo reads sharp and assertive initially. Then the florals take over. Black rose arrives dense and romantic, not delicate. Peony adds a creaminess that tempers the herbal edge. The narcissus brings a faint green note, keeping the heart from becoming purely sweet. The drydown is where oud and vanilla lock in, the sweetness doesn't disappear but it deepens, becomes resinous and warm, clinging close to the skin. The transition between these stages feels natural, each phase informing the next.
Cultural impact
Scherzo occupies a distinctive space in the niche fragrance landscape, appealing to those who appreciate bold, complex compositions. The fragrance balances sweet floral elements with deeper woody notes, creating something that feels both romantic and intellectually engaging. Wearers have responded to its distinctive character, noting how the sweetness interacts with the herbal and woody undertones to create something memorable. The composition offers depth that rewards attention, revealing different facets as it develops on the skin.
