The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Mathieu Nardin created Powdered Veil for Miller Harris in 2018. The brief was simple: translate the imagery of powder puffs and old compacts into something contemporary. Not nostalgic. Not heavy. Translucent. The result is an oriental that wears its warmth quietly, wrapping amber and vanilla in a veil of cashmere-soft florals. This is the scent of someone who understands that some forms of glamour happen at a distance of inches, not feet.
What makes Powdered Veil interesting is the contradiction at its core. Oriental fragrances typically announce themselves; this one withdraws. The cashmeran and fluffy musk create a powdery texture that reads as warmth rather than presence. Hedione adds luminosity without brightness, and the bourbon vanilla absolute keeps the base from ever going sharp. It's a composition built for restraint, where every note has been asked to step back so the whole can feel intimate.
The evolution
The opening arrives sparkling. Pink pepper and geranium create a brief, tart brightness that fades within minutes. Then the orchid and hedione take over, painting the heart in transparent florals that feel weightless. This phase lasts the longest, three to four hours of luminous softness. The drydown is where Powdered Veil becomes itself: vanilla, sandalwood, and labdanum warm the skin quietly. Cashmeran and musk add that signature powder texture, the kind that stays close and intimate rather than projecting outward. Moderate sillage means it won't fill a room. It wasn't designed to.
Cultural impact
Powdered Veil occupies a specific corner of the fragrance world: warm, powdery-woody, and intimate. The 2018 launch date places it in a moment when the industry was shifting toward skin-close, personal fragrances rather than room-filling statements. Its unisex positioning fits that same trend. Wearers who connect with Powdered Veil tend to appreciate the restraint. Those who don't usually wanted more projection. The powder-forward character divides opinion, which is part of what makes it memorable.
