The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Jean-Claude Gigodot created Coeur de Rose for Maison Incens in 2016. The name means heart of rose, and it points to what the fragrance is after: not a rose you receive, but a rose you discover. Gigodot builds outward from that center, using orris root as a structural anchor that holds the composition together. Cedar and hay in the base give the rose something to stand on. Not a vase. Ground.
The orris-yland pairing is the unexpected move. Orris root brings a cool, powdery violet note that reads almost as a counter to the rose's warmth. Ylang-ylang brings the opposite: tropical lushness, a creamy sweetness that rounds the edges. Together they create a rose that's neither purely romantic nor purely austere. It lives somewhere in between, which is where the interesting fragrances always go.
The evolution
The first hour belongs to citrus and neroli. The citrus lifts and brightens, while neroli brings its own particular richness, a floralcy that feels deeper than the opening suggests. The neroli doesn't disappear when the citrus fades. It stays, adding body beneath what comes next. Then the heart arrives. The rose deepens, the orris grows more pronounced, and the spices warm into something that feels less like an ingredient and more like an atmosphere. The ylang-ylang gives the florals a creaminess that keeps everything lush without tipping into sweetness. This is the fragrance's most complete phase, where all the elements feel equally present. By hour four, the base takes over. Cedar and vanilla create a warm, close sensation, but the hay is the note that distinguishes the drydown. It gives the base a natural, slightly animalic quality that feels more field than laboratory. Musk keeps it clean and skin-like. The fragrance becomes intimate, present, yours. On fabric, it lasts for days.
Cultural impact
Since its 2016 launch, Coeur de Rose has found an audience among people who want a rose that doesn't behave like one. It sits apart from both commercial rose fragrances and the incense-heavyMaison Incens catalog, offering warmth and powdery depth without relying on the obvious. For niche buyers who want something distinctive without straying into novelty territory, it occupies exactly the right space.
