The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Star Dust was built in 2005 as part of a nocturnal offshoot from the original Lolita fragrance. The original Lolita had already established a certain template, demonstrating that black licorice and vanilla could work together. Annick Menardo's 1997 composition explored this combination in depth, showing how these two elements could be balanced. The Midnight version builds on that foundation while taking the signature accord in a different direction.
Anise opens bright and commanding, carrying the unmistakable character of black licorice candy. Vanilla arrives warm and gourmand, creating an interesting counterpoint to the sharp opening. Iris sits between them, lending a powdery softness that prevents the composition from becoming too aggressive. Violet does something interesting as well: it bridges the sharp top and the sweet heart, making the transition feel intentional rather than abrupt. The base notes do their work of wrapping the anise in warmth, creating something that lingers close to the skin.
The evolution
For the first ten minutes, anise dominates the composition. Bright and unapologetic, the black licorice character announces itself clearly. Ivy appears briefly, adding a green counterpoint that prevents the opening from becoming purely sweet. As time passes, the licorice in the heart becomes more pronounced while vanilla starts building beneath the surface. Violet and iris create a powdery middle ground while the base notes, jasmine, and additional vanilla begin their slow emergence. By the second hour, the composition has settled into something warm and intimate. The sillage moderates and the drydown is where this fragrance reveals its staying power. Vanilla and benzoin create a close, enveloping warmth that lasts into the evening.
Cultural impact
Among the Lolita Lempicka offerings, Star Dust Midnight occupies a notable position. The fragrance appeals to those who appreciate the house's signature licorice-vanilla accord and want it expressed with strong definition and projection. The scent has developed a dedicated following among enthusiasts who seek out its particular character and bold presence.
