The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Encuentro en el puente Reina Victoria, named for a bridge crossing in Madrid, captures the specific atmosphere of an evening encounter. Built around the Un Paseo por Madrid collection, this fragrance explores the city's character through scent. The composition focuses on the moment the light drops, the air cools, and something shifts between two people crossing paths. The bridge is literal and metaphorical: a threshold, a decision to stop or keep walking.
What sets this apart is tolu balsam. In rose-vanilla compositions, the heart often bridges the gap between top and base with various floral accords. Tolu balsam does something different. It's balsamic, resinous, slightly sweet in a way that recalls storax or benzoin, but with a drier character that never slides into syrup. Combined with rose and a warm cinnamon-cardamom spice cluster, it creates a heart that feels powdery and intimate rather than bright or heady. This placement in the gourmand-chypre category gives it an unusual position, where edible warmth meets sophisticated depth.
The evolution
Coriander and bergamot arrive quickly, a crisp, slightly tart opening that reads as distinctly Mediterranean. The cypress keeps a cool undertone for the first thirty minutes, like stone cooling in evening air. Then the hand-off: rose and tolu balsam emerge together, the rose's petals softened by the balsamic warmth, cinnamon and cardamom adding heat that never burns. By hour two, the composition has shifted entirely. Vanilla and nappa leather dominate the drydown, with patchouli lending an earthy counterweight that stops the sweetness from floating away. The base settles close to the skin, intimate and personal. What lingers is a warm skin scent, vanilla barely perceptible, the leather settled into something quiet and quiet and personal, inviting those nearby to lean in.
Cultural impact
The release found its audience among wearers who wanted gourmand warmth without the usual sweetness, and leather depth without aggression. The tolu balsam note gave it a distinctiveness that set it apart from more conventional offerings. Those who discovered it tended to appreciate its unique character, where the intimate drydown rewards close attention rather than demanding room presence.
