The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Paula's Ibiza Eclectic arrived in 2022 as part of Loewe's sun-soaked island collection, designed by in-house perfumer Núria Cruelles Borrull. The name carries an air of the unexpected, suggesting something that resists easy categorization. Eclectic implies something layered, unexpected, a fragrance that refuses a single identity. Cruelles built this around the tension between crisp citrus and tropical florals, the contradiction of fresh and lush, sharp and creamy. It's Loewe's take on island luxury: not beachy in the sunscreen sense, but in the sense of a villa at golden hour, where the flowers are overgrown and the light is everything.
What makes this work is the layering of orange blossom absolute with jasmine sambac, two white florals with completely different textures. Orange blossom is clean, slightly bitter, the smell of bitter citrus petals. Jasmine sambac is warmer, deeper, with an almost fruity richness. Together they create a floral heart that reads as neither polite nor overwhelming, just insistently present. The coconut in the heart is the surprise element: not beachy coconut, but a creamy note that bridges the florals to the sandalwood base, making the transition feel seamless rather than choppy.
The evolution
The mandarin opening is quick and confident, thirty seconds of bright citrus that doesn't linger. Within minutes the ylang-ylang moves in, heavy and tropical, and this is where the fragrance makes its first declaration. It's not subtle. The jasmine sambac follows, adding depth and that characteristic indolic quality that makes white florals smell like real flowers rather than abstractions. The coconut then smooths everything together, pulling the floral heart toward creaminess. By hour two, the florals begin to settle into the sandalwood base, and this is where Eclectic earns its name, the warmth becomes resinous, almost smoky, with vanilla and musk creating a skin-close drydown that lasts well into the evening. On fabric, it transforms. The floral elements soften while the vanilla and sandalwood amplify, creating something that smells like warm skin and warm evening air.
Cultural impact
The Paula's Ibiza line occupies a specific space in the Loewe portfolio, unapologetically warm, sun-drenched, and slightly rebellious against the brand's spare aesthetic. This fragrance makes no apologies for its bold floral character, presenting instead as a considered statement of luxury that prizes depth over convention. It's an invitation to explore something outside the expected, to engage with a scent that rewards attention and reveals complexity over time.
