The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Núria Cruelles, Loewe's in-house perfumer, created Solo Atlas in 2021 as part of the brand's Solo collection. The fragrance itself is more intimate than monumental. Cruelles assembled a palette that pairs bright citrus florals with mineral and resinous elements. The citrus florals open with clarity, the mandarin and neroli initially crisp and luminous before the mineral and resinous backbone asserts itself. Salt and mastic create an aromatic anchor that keeps the brightness grounded, preventing the floral elements from feeling ephemeral. The orange blossom adds creaminess while remaining secondary to the unexpected structure beneath it. What emerges is a fragrance where floral and mineral coexist without one dominating the other.
What makes Solo Atlas unusual is the structural choice at its heart: Moroccan mastic and salt anchoring an otherwise bright, floral composition. Mastic here becomes part of the atmosphere, adding an herbal quality that shapes the overall character of the fragrance. The salt adds minerality, creating texture without reading as a literal marine note. This floral-citrus-resinous-mineral combination gives the fragrance a character that rewards close attention.
The evolution
Solo Atlas opens bright and clear, Tunisian neroli at the center, backed by mandarin and pink pepper. Within the first hour, the initial citrus cloud settles and something more complex emerges: a mineral character where salt and mastic take over. Egyptian orange blossom adds warmth and a creamier texture to the composition. What started as bright becomes something more grounded, yet still graceful. The florals linger against the resinous base long after the citrus has faded. By the final act, frankincense resin and amber create a warm base, and the florals persist against it longer than expected. Peony and lily of the valley stay present through the drydown, giving the fragrance a sustained floral character that extends into the final stages. Vetiver and musk keep everything clean and composed.
Cultural impact
Solo Atlas arrived in 2021 as part of Loewe's Solo collection. The floral-citrus-resinous-mineral combination is specific enough to reward attention without demanding it. The fragrance appeals to those who appreciate nuanced composition over straightforward structure. Cruelles brings a perspective that shows in the structural choices, building a fragrance that doesn't rely on the expected woody or leather base associated with masculine perfumery. It's floral at its core, with an architecture that sets it apart from more conventional offerings in the category.
