The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Patricia de Nicolaï has always been drawn to the orange flower. Not as a single note, but as a material with range, neroli oil, orange blossom absolute, petitgrain bigarade. Each form carries something different. Néroli Intense, launched in 2018, is the result of her wanting to explore that range fully, building a fragrance around the full breadth of what orange blossom can do rather than one interpretation of it.
What makes this composition unusual is the density of white floral material without the usual delicate quality. Orange blossom absolute brings a honeyed, almost sticky warmth that pushes against the expectation of white florals as delicate. Pittosporum blossom adds a quiet, slightly fruity lift that keeps the heart from becoming too heavy. Beeswax absolute is the counterweight, it grounds the florals, gives them weight and warmth without sweetness, and creates the foundation that extends wear time well beyond what most white florals manage.
The evolution
The opening arrives bright, with neroli and mandarin orange setting a citrusy tone that tarragon sharpens slightly. That initial brightness holds for the first hour before the orange blossom absolute takes over, suddenly the composition feels richer, honeyed, like warm petals pressed together. Petitgrain and pitosporum bring a green, slightly fruity counterpoint that keeps the heart from becoming heavy. By the second hour, beeswax and white musk arrive, settling the fragrance close to skin. Patchouli threads underneath, barely there, adding a dry earthy quality that lingers. The drydown is intimate, warm, soft, present, holding close through the evening and still detectable the next morning.
Cultural impact
Among lovers of classical French perfumery, Nicolai occupies a quiet, respected position, the house for people who know. Néroli Intense fits that profile: it's not a statement fragrance, but a demonstration of mastery. The density of orange blossom material, the beeswax anchor, the way it develops across hours, these are the marks of a composition built for the wearer who prioritizes depth over drama.
