The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Oud & Woods arrived in 2021 as part of the Orientale collection. Maud Chabanis designed it around a modern vision of tobacco leather, something that felt contemporary while maintaining the house's character. The collection took traditional materials and explored unexpected directions. This was the approach that guided the development of the fragrance, balancing heritage with a fresh perspective on familiar accords. The structure demonstrates how classic ingredients can be reconsidered, finding new relationships between notes that feel both grounded and innovative. Each element contributes to a cohesive whole that speaks to both tradition and modernity.
The structure presents tobacco and oud as parallel rather than competing elements. The saffron-spice opening establishes warmth and brightness before the darker materials fully emerge. The frankincense and labdanum in the heart deepen the tobacco rather than compete with it, adding resinous layers that make the leather accord feel dimensional. Cypriol brings an earthy warmth that grounds the composition, preventing it from becoming purely sweet.
The evolution
The opening arrives with a clean crack of pink pepper and bergamot. Bright. Almost sparkling. Then saffron cuts in, metallic and distinct, creating a shift in tone. The citrus fades as the composition develops, and tobacco rises with a warm, resonant presence. Incense smoke weaves through the heart, while nutmeg lingers at the edges, keeping the composition spicy without becoming heavy. As the base takes over, oud anchors everything, not sweet, not animalic, just deep and complex. Amber adds a resinous glow. Moss and clary sage give the drydown an earthy quality that feels natural on skin. The sillage settles into something intimate, staying close to the wearer. A quiet trace of oud and amber remains on fabric the next morning. Warm. Worth returning to.
Cultural impact
Oud & Woods rewards close attention. The fragrance is complex enough to reveal new dimensions with sustained wearing, inviting those who appreciate detailed composition to explore its layers. It presents itself honestly, without requiring extensive context to appreciate its construction. The balance between traditional oriental elements and a measured, refined execution makes it a distinctive offering for someone seeking depth without excess.
