The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Maud Chabanis approached the Historique collection commission with the task of translating Lesquendieu's pharmacy-born precision into a modern scent. Rather than reaching for immediately crowd-pleasing ingredients, she began with bergamot and birch, two materials that share a clean, almost clinical clarity. The choice was deliberate: bergamot provides the familiar entry point, but birch adds an unexpected coolness that signals this is not a conventional citrus fragrance. Tea reinforces the methodical, almost restrained character that defines the brand's identity.
Chabanis chose these specific materials because they allowed her to explore a tension between clarity and warmth that mirrors Lesquendieu's own identity. The bergamot and birch opening references the brand's pharmaceutical precision, while the tonka, labdanum, and jasmine heart introduces a softness that makes the fragrance wearable rather than merely conceptual. The vanilla-amber base grounds the composition and ensures longevity, proving that restraint in the opening does not mean compromise in the finish. Pairings with cedarwood and amber reflect an understanding that modern wearers want complexity without chaos, and the fragrance delivers exactly that.
The evolution
The opening assault of bergamot and birch settles within the first fifteen minutes, revealing the tonka-jasmine-labdanum heart. This is where the fragrance pivots from austerity to warmth, a transition that unfolds gradually rather than all at once. Tonka bean introduces its signature sweetness, but jasmine prevents it from becoming round and predictable. Labdanum anchors the heart with a sticky, resinous presence that feels tied to the brand's vintage heritage. The progression into the vanilla-amber and cedarwood drydown completes a full narrative arc, moving from cold precision to warm sensuality, and finally settling into a woody, meditative stillness that remains detectable for hours.
Cultural impact
Since its 2016 debut, Lesquendieu Le Parfum has become a reference point for collectors seeking a bridge between classic French elegance and contemporary spice. Critics note its birch‑smoked opening as a bold departure from typical citrus starts, while its tea‑bright facet earns praise for freshness. The scent is often mentioned alongside Bvlgari Black (2017) for its smoky‑sweet duality, positioning it as a modern classic within niche circles.
