The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
In 2016, Lancôme tasked Anne Flipo, Dominique Ropion, and Claire Liégent with returning to the La Vie Est Belle universe and doing something specific: amplifying the florals while keeping the soul intact. The original had already defined a certain Parisian happiness. This was about finding a different angle on it. The result is L'Eau de Toilette Florale, a flanker that takes the core philosophy, life is beautiful, and translates it into something that smells like the moment the afternoon light turns golden and you realize the day actually went well. The perfumers chose osmanthus absolute as the defining note, a material known for its velvety, apricot-scented character that sits between floral and fruity. It's an unusual choice for a mass-market flanker, which is exactly the point.
What makes this composition work is restraint within abundance. Seven florals in the heart, osmanthus, jasmine, violet, magnolia, mimosa, rose, orange blossom, and yet none of them crowd the stage. The perfumers structured a deliberate hand-off: bergamot and pink pepper open bright, the floral heart arrives in waves rather than all at once, and the base of iris and amberwood keeps everything grounded without going heavy. The osmanthus absolute deserves particular attention. It's not a common material in mainstream perfumery, prized for its buttery, apricot-like warmth that can read as floral or fruity depending on the skin.
The evolution
The opening announces itself with crisp authority, bergamot's citrus brightness, pink pepper's subtle heat, the clean green bite of currant buds. Freesia floats through, giving the top a dewy, almost transparent quality that keeps everything feeling lifted. Within the first hour, the florals begin their slow take-over. The handoff is seamless: citrus fades, osmanthus rises. The heart doesn't arrive all at once. It's a gradual unfurling, magnolia first, creamy and wide, then rose and jasmine arriving to add depth, violet whispering from beneath, mimosa and orange blossom threading through with their honeyed and crisp qualities respectively. By hour three, the drydown begins its quiet work. Iris takes over, powdery and refined, its violet facet doing what it does best, making everything around it feel softer and more sophisticated.
Cultural impact
This flanker offers a floral interpretation of the original La Vie Est Belle. The osmanthus note sets this version apart, lending a distinctive character more common in niche perfumery. The "Florale" naming signals a commitment to the floral accord over the original's gourmand warmth, offering a different take for those who want to stay within the La Vie Est Belle family. It's the flanker for people who loved the idea of the original but preferred their happiness without the praline.
