The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Jonah arrived in 2025 as a collaboration between Arthur Clayton Emrick's Jinx Smells house and Moustafa Shoair of Yaaseen. Emrick's house is committed to natural raw materials, with the formulation described as completely natural and free of aroma chemicals. The lineup reads like a perfumer's map of the world: Cambodian oud, Indonesian sandalwood, Kashmiri musk, natural civet. Those aren't reconstructed in a lab. They were sourced from where they say they were sourced. Cambodian oud brings the resinous, barnyard funk that defines classic oud work. Indonesian sandalwood adds creamy, woody depth underneath. Kashmiri musk lends a soft, warm fur. Natural civet contributes the animalic weight that anchors the composition. The collaboration let Emrick explore white florals and bright citrus.
What makes the composition worth attention is the civet. Not a whisper of it, not a synthetic approximation, but a real animalic accord sitting next to Cambodian oud and white ambergris. That base trio is doing heavy structural work, holding up a top that is unusually bright for a Jinx release. Pink grapefruit, yuzu, and Italian neroli crash against jasmine sambac, white lotus, and champaca, then the whole bouquet tilts downward into resin and fur.
The evolution
The first ten minutes belong to citrus. Pink grapefruit and yuzu arrive sharp and acidic, with blackcurrant adding a tart sweetness that almost reads as fruit punch. Italian neroli blooms underneath, and for a moment the whole thing could pass for a bright eau de toilette. The neroli carries a green, slightly bitter edge that keeps the citrus from going candy-sweet. Then the white florals settle in. Jasmine sambac and white lotus take over with a cool, almost aquatic creaminess, and the neroli keeps its grip. Champaca adds a tealike warmth that bridges toward the base. The jasmine sambac reads indolic and heady rather than clean, mixing with the lotus to create a humid, almost dewy floral core. Around the ninety-minute mark the composition pivots hard. Cambodian oud surfaces first, woody and resinous, bringing that barnyard, slightly medicinal character that natural oud carries.
Cultural impact
Jonah functions as a collaboration piece between Arthur Clayton Emrick of Jinx Smells and Moustafa Shoair of Yaaseen. Each perfumer brings a distinct material vocabulary to the project. Emrick's house is known for working with natural oud, civet, and musk, while the Yaaseen side contributes access to white-floral materials and citrus work that round out the composition. The resulting scent sits in dialogue with both houses' catalogues without feeling like either a straight Jinx release or a typical Yaaseen profile.
