The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Mon Guerlain Limited Edition 2018 is a collector's iteration of the original Mon Guerlain Eau de Parfum, released the same year by Guerlain. Thierry Wasser and Delphine Jelk composed the formula, layering French lavender with jasmine sambac, coumarin, and a base of sandalwood and tahitensis vanilla. The Limited Edition bottle, designed by Alex & Marine, recontextualizes the juice inside a more sculptural object. Same scent, different frame. This version was built for collectors who wanted the same composition presented differently, with the redesigned flacon serving as the primary point of departure from the original release. The decorative skin around the juice shifts the way light moves through the glass, the way weight sits in the hand, the way the bottle reads on a vanity.
What makes this composition work is the way the lavender refuses to behave like a fougere opening. It opens cool and herbal, yes, but the iris-powder sits right behind it, and within minutes the vanilla is already pulling the whole thing toward warmth. The benzoin and tonka add a sticky, almost caramelized depth that softens the licorice's sharpness. Patchouli anchors the base without going earthy or aggressive, which is the trick. Most lavender-vanilla compositions either lean too clean or too gourmand. This one threads the needle by letting sandalwood do the heavy structural work while everything else orbits it.
The evolution
The first fifteen minutes are almost disarmingly clean. Lavender, bergamot, a thread of iris powder that arrives earlier than expected. It reads like a walk through a garden before anyone else has gotten there. Then the jasmine blooms, and the vanilla starts its slow climb. By the forty-minute mark, the composition has shifted entirely. The coolness retreats, replaced by a warm, resinous sweetness. Benzoin and tonka arrive together, giving the vanilla a lacquered, almost ambered quality. The licorice adds a faint anise edge, keeping it from going pure dessert. From hour two onward, the sandalwood and patchouli settle into a quiet, creamy base that doesn't project aggressively but stays close to the skin. The sweetness mellows into something less confectionary and more like warm wood wrapped in soft resin.
Cultural impact
Mon Guerlain and its Limited Edition variants have become recognizable entries within the broader landscape of contemporary perfumery. The campaign's association with Angelina Jolie brought the fragrance into broader public consciousness, giving it a visibility that extended well beyond fragrance enthusiast circles. The Limited Edition 2018 in particular leaned into this visibility through its redesigned bottle by Alex & Marine, turning the object into something worth photographing, displaying, and discussing.
